The EU Packaging Regulation applies from 12 August 2026. Anyone placing packaging on the market under their own name should start their supplier requests now.
Regulation (EU) 2025/40 on packaging and packaging waste, the PPWR for short, has been in force since 11 February 2025. It applies from 12 August 2026. That leaves just under six months.
For food manufacturers and brand owners, this means: for every packaging placed on the market from that date, they need a conformity assessment, technical documentation and an EU declaration of conformity. The data for this usually does not sit in-house, but with the packaging suppliers.
Six months sounds like plenty of time. But with several hundred items and dozens of suppliers, you will need it: suppliers have to be contacted, queries answered, test reports requested and answers checked.

- Record your packaging portfolio by packaging type
- Assign suppliers to the packaging
- Prepare and send supplier requests under Art. 16
- Document gaps per item
